One of my first personal projects in the UAE was photographing the residential villas around the districts of Umm Al Suqeem and Al Barsha in the early 2000s. These pictures were made in collaboration with the photographer and filmmaker Celia Peterson. They explored the unfettered design eccentricities of the burgeoning city as it rapidly transitioned from undeveloped desert backwater to hyper-modern first world mega city.

The series was featured in Bidoun Publishing’s book ‘With/Without’ in 2007 and was later included in the exhibition ‘Arab Contemporary. Architecture, Culture and Identity’ at the Louisiana Museum of Modern Art, Copenhagen in 2014, and featured in Creative Review Magazine. In 2016 it was featured in Case Vogue Magazine, Italy. and was also included in my solo show ‘The Anthropocene’ at GPP, Dubai.
